Plot
The film begins with videos of the Castle Bravo nuclear test as well as videos of a large object moving through the water.
In 1999, scientists Daisuke Serizawa and Vivienne Graham (Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins) locate two chrysalis-shaped pods and an enormous skeleton in a quarry in the Philippines, discovering one of the pods has hatched.
Shortly afterwards the Janjira Nuclear Plant near Tokyo, Japan suffers a catastrophic earthquake, triggering a meltdown which kills the wife of nuclear technician Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston) and results in the evacuation and quarantine of the Janjira area.
In the present day, Joe has become derided as a conspiracy theorist while his son Ford (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is an explosive ordinance disposal technician in the United States Navy. When Joe is arrested for trespassing Janjira, Ford travels to Japan to assist him and is convinced by Joe to come with him to Janjira.
There they discover evidence of a cover-up and are soon taken into custody, where it is revealed that a massive chrysalis has appeared in the remains of the nuclear power plant. The chrysalis soon hatches and unleashes a gigantic winged creature, which flies off after obliterating the facility containing it.
Joe is wounded in the chaos and dies, while Ford is taken into custody.

While onboard the USS Saratoga, Ford is informed by Serizawa and his team that the creature he saw at Janjira was a MUTO, or Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism, an ancient creature from a much earlier time period which feeds off radiation and radioactive material.
It in turn is being hunted by a much larger animal whose existence has been covered up for decades following numerous attempts to kill it with nuclear weapons. Ford reveals that his father had tracked a form of echolocation from the Janjira area, which leads the team to believe the MUTO was communicating with something.
